Innovative payment models proposed for high-cost gene therapies

Posted on

While various innovative financing models have been proposed to make gene therapies more accessible, significant barriers still impede their implementation, according to a study. Overcoming these challenges through shared experiences and further evaluation is crucial for improving access and effectiveness of these high-cost treatments.

The review included articles (N = 10) that described or proposed financing models used to provide coverage across various global systems.

The results highlighted several proposed financing models, such as subscription-based payment models, outcome-based payment models, and amortization strategies. However, the implementation of these models faces several barriers. These include deficiencies in informatics systems for data collection, necessary changes in laws or regulations, lack of accessible clinical endpoints, and administrative costs.

The researchers hoped that sharing experiences with these models could provide valuable insights for their evaluation and effectiveness, potentially leading to broader access and improved outcomes for patients.
